RECESS: IS THAT ALL THERE IS?

January 19, 2015by admin

This is a typical exchange I have with my 8-year-old son:

“How was school today?” I’ll ask.

“Good.”

“What did you learn today?”

His response, “Nothing.”

“What was the best part of your day?”

The answer is always, “Recess.”

I don’t know about you, but these exchanges leave me wanting.  They also leave me a little concerned about my tax dollars supporting his apparent lack of education.  However, I’m pretty sure he learns SOMETHING while at school.  He seems to be reading well and understands math concepts, yet, I’m so curious… what does he really do during his day?

I have found that interacting with him in different settings and at different times of the day is helpful.  For instance, helping him assemble some Legos or doing a word puzzle with him sometimes allows a precious nugget of his inner world to spring forth.  Sometimes, this doesn’t feel like enough.

I am always looking for new ways to improve communication between myself and my children.  On January 29th at 1:00pm, Riverview Counseling Services is offering a workshop to address parent-child communication.  In this FREE workshop, licensed clinical therapist, Cheryl Denz, will outline strategies to help get your children to open up more easily.  These strategies will be invaluable as your children grow.  The sooner we establish a clear-channel of communication with our kids, the more quickly we may learn there is more to their life than just recess.

To find out more about this and other upcoming parenting workshops, click on the ‘Our Services’ tab and scroll to the workshop link.  You can sign up directly through this page, or if you have any questions regarding registration or signing up, please contact Cheryl Denz at 630/587-3777 x103.
